Blue Martian Sunset

Why are Martian sunsets blue?

The sunset pictured here may look strange to you and me, but on Mars it's a rather common sight. A bluish hue radiates outward from the setting Sun, fading gradually before taking on a pinkish tinge.

Strangely enough, that's more or less the exact opposite of what you'd expect to see during sunsets here on Earth, which tend to fade from warm, ruddy colors into the bluish purples typical of a late afternoon sky. So why, exactly, are Martian sunsets blue? For that matter, why are they basically inverted versions of what we find here on Earth?

Over on NPR, Ezra Block and Robert Krulwich explain that the answer boils down to airborne dust — more specifically the size of that dust, and the wavelengths of light those dust particles let through.

Martian dust is smaller and more plentiful than the particles you find floating around here on Earth, and it happens to be just the right size that it absorbs blue wavelengths while scattering red ones across the sky. These red wavelengths are what give much of the Martian firmament that pinkish hue. Look directly toward the setting sun, however, and you'll see blue. That's because the beams of light coming from this direction have lost their red waves entirely (they've been filtered out, and scattered by the dust, remember?), so the only wavelengths of light that make it through are those that give the light its blue appearance.

Why are Martian sunsets blue?

On Earth, our larger atmospheric particles scatter blue wavelenghts instead of red, so the opposite effect is observed. What's interesting is that astronomers think they can use spectral properties like these to gather important details about planets throughout our galaxy

World Shortest Flight

The world’s shortest commercial flight takes place between the two Orkney Islands, Westray and Papa Westray, just north of Scotland, separated by a distance of only 1.7 miles. Operated by Loganair, the flight duration is officially two minutes, but under ideal wind condition can be completed in only 47 seconds. Tickets are priced at about $30 per passenger with no in-flight service. According to reports published in The Daily Mail, about 30 percent of the service's passengers are associated with the Orkney Islands Council's education service, while many others are health staff and patients of the Scottish National Health Service. The island of Papa Westray is home to just over 70 people, and 60 archaeological sites.

Loganair, which has flown the route since the 1960s, introduced a popular flight for tourists in 2011. The special flights fly a couple days each week in the summer for folks who just want the flight and then to get back to the Orkney Mainland rather than stay out on the islands.

Singing Ringing Tree

File:Singing Ringing Tree Stitch.jpg

The Singing Ringing Tree is a wind powered sound sculpture resembling a tree set in the landscape of the Pennine hill range overlooking Burnley, in Lancashire, England.

Completed in 2006, it is part of the series of four sculptures within the Panopticons arts and regeneration project created by the East Lancashire Environmental Arts Network (ELEAN). The project was set up to erect a series of 21st-century landmarks, or Panopticons (structures providing a comprehensive view), across East Lancashire as symbols of the renaissance of the area.

Designed by architects Mike Tonkin and Anna Liu of Tonkin Liu, the Singing Ringing Tree is a 3 metre tall construction comprising pipes of galvanised steel which harness the energy of the wind to produce a slightly discordant and penetrating choral sound covering a range of several octaves. Some of the pipes are primarily structural and aesthetic elements, while others have been cut across their width enabling the sound. The harmonic and singing qualities of the tree were produced by tuning the pipes according to their length by adding holes to the underside of each.

In 2007, the sculpture won (along with 13 other candidates) the National Award of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) for architectural excellence.

72 yrs Shea Vaughn's keys to wellness

Okay, so the use of the phrase made famous by Shea’s son Vince Vaughn may be a bit of overkill, but after digging deep into Mrs. Vaughn’s background it’s easy to see where Vince gets his amazing energy, professional drive and incomparable charm.
Shea Vaughn

Shea Vaughn is the creator of a revolutionary lifestyle practice known as SheaNetics. The doctor endorsed practice blends Eastern and Western values and movements giving a powerful mind-body experience to its users. The practice is based on five basic principals that Vaughn calls The Living Principals of Well-Being; Commitment, Perseverance, Self-Control, Integrity and Love which unite the body and mind as one and inspire the answers people seek to the life that they deserve. As Vaughn explains, “SheaNetics takes mind-body transformation one step further with a fresh self-styled approach to exercise that combines yoga, pilates, tai chi, martial arts, ballet and lots more along with the performance enhancing benefits of Tri-Core Power Training to develop your ‘killer’ core.”

Vaughn says her inspiration to create the program came from her own personal experiences with Eastern and Western lifestyles along with her students’ enthusiasm to learn. She began adding in certain poses and trying different things in her exercise classes that the students hadn’t seen or done before, but immediately found beneficial. Vaughn says that unlike many other forms of exercise, SheaNetics is different because it offers a combination of physical and philosophical concepts that can transform one’s life both emotionally and physically.

If there is anyone who can serve as a testimony to the benefits of SheaNetics it is Shea Vaughn herself. Her body appears ageless from head to toe and she seems to be full of amazing energy regardless of what her day brings. To get a closer look at what Vaughn does to keep herself in tip top shape, I asked the wellness guru to fill us in on her daily routine. “I am up in the morning around 4:15 am,” she says. “I always have a half cup of warm water with fresh squeezed lemon and take two cayenne pepper capsules to jump start my system. I usually begin my workout with a run, bike or session on the Cybex Treadmill, and often times I do a combination to mix it up. Four times a week I do some light weights and use some bands. I routinely add SheaNetics to stretch it all out and build total body strength. I take off one day a week to give my body rest.” As far as diet goes, Vaughn who is a strict vegan usually has a smoothie every morning made of 70% veggies and 30% fresh fruit. Her remaining meals usually consist of salads, rice chips, brown rice, berries, watermelon and hummus.

While Vaughn believes that we must all learn to care for our bodies better and make healthier choices, she does agree that for many, stress is the leading cause for poor habits. “The term ‘comfort food’ is perfectly coined,” she says. “Stress creates negative psychological side effects mentally which over time can affect a person’s physical well-being.” She also says that prolonged stress leads to an ongoing secretion of Cortisol (the body’s stress hormone), which overtime has toxic effects on the body, weakens the immune system and can lead to such physical and emotional ailments as hypoglycemia, binge eating, panic attacks, nervous breakdowns, depression, heart disease and even suicidal tendencies.  While a physician must treat certain ailments, Vaughn believes most can be treated and even prevented with proper nutrition and exercise. “It’s commonly understood that exercise helps to strengthen your immune system, thereby preventing illness or lessoning its affects,” she says. “Nutrition plays a big part in health at any age, but more so as we age and the process affects our metabolism.” She says that cutting out fatty and fried foods should be everyone’s first step in getting healthier, and she suggests incorporating as many vegetables, fruits and nuts as possible. She believes that having grab and go foods in the house like veggies and fruit not only lead to better choices for both you and your family, it can help to ease the stress of balancing a family and a busy schedule.

While Shea Vaughn may have her life and health in order, she can still sympathize with other moms out there struggling to find a program that truly their lifestyle. She advises busy moms to take charge of their own life and realize that no one can do it for them. “Weight loss is realizing that it is a lifestyle change,” she says. “With it come the rewards of reaching your goals and sustaining them.” For those looking for more specific guidance, Vaughn suggests following her Five Principals of Well-Being found in her new book, Breakthrough. She says within its pages, readers will find solutions to overcoming issues, breaking through barriers, taking weight off and keeping it off permanently.

Behind the Scene

For this year’s Progressive International Motorcycle Show, i.d.e.a. branding and advertising agency turned models into motorcycles. NO, they’re not magicians — they hired artist Trina Merry to paint the bodies of yoga gurus (aka flexy people) to look like a sport bike, a dirt bike, and a cruiser.

How to get a Flat and Sexy Stomach

How to get a flat, sexy stomach. First, we have to look at the problem. Think about what you are doing now and how it obviously isn’t working since you’re still looking to get that stomach flatter. Also, remember that we all have abs. They are there. However, getting them to be noticed is the problem.

We have to get rid of that layer of fat that covers them. It is a challenge and if you sick through it… you will see results you could never even imagine! Which is the best feeling in the world. Alright so now in order to do this there are two things that need to be focused on: Diet and Exercise.
The Diet:
Now since I don’t know everyone’s body type and how exactly your individual bodies work. You have to work on managing what you need to make it work for you.
  1. Drink lots of water.Personally, I feel like this is the most important thing to do. Drinking water will keep you hydrated and you will keep flushing out all of the bad toxins in your body, which is great! It will also improve your skin. Drinking water also is good to do when you feel hungry at a time you shouldn’t be. Also, you can tell if you are drinking enough by

Berry your way to a flat stomach!
simply looking at the color of your pee. If it’s a dark yellow, you need to drink up. The clearer the more hydrated you are.
  2. Fiber. Eat lots of fiber. You can find fiber in fruit and veggies. I say the best thing to eat is broccoli. Making sure you get enough fiber will also help clean out your body by keeping your system regular. It can also help lower your cholesterol. Also, berries are great for trying to get that flat stomach and they are delicious.
  3. Eat 5 meals a day. Try and eat something every 3-4 hours. This will keep your metabolism going. 2 of the 5 meals are snacks… keep those light and healthy to keep you on track. Good snacks are apples and peanut butter, fruit salad, granola, fat-free yogurt anything small and healthy will do. Pick what you like.
  4. No more junk! Get rid of it. Don’t look at it, don’t think about it. Seriously if you want to lose weight in your stomach you have to stop eating chips, ice cream, chocolate, and refrain from fast food as much as you can. If you absolutely need some look to frozen yogurt or sorbet.
  5. Eat. One huge mistake people often make is not eating. This won’t work and it’s not good for you. Also, eat breakfast. You should be hungry in the morning if you are eating light before bed and working out. You will become like me… I look forward to breakfast, it’s my favorite meal! I wake up so hungry. I have no idea how people skip it.
The Exercise:
  1. Cardio. Cardio, cardio, cardio… learn to love it. You can do anything just get moving for 30 mins a day, do more if you can. More is better. If you are new to cardio start walking and eventually start jogging. But I love the elliptical, rollerblading, biking, running, stair master, dancing, jump roping, golfing(but carry your bag.. don’t get a cart)… find several cardio workouts that you like so you can change it up. Make it fun.

  2. Ab workouts. After cardio is the best time to do abs. You are in the workout mood and your body is warmed up and ready to go. There are so many ab exercises out there. Tons of them. Some I like may not work for you. Do exercises that you do right and ones that you can feel it working. Its good to really push it. That’s how you get stronger. When you feel like stopping do just a little longer. I like doing planks, scissor kicks, toe-touches and I don’t know names for a lot of them and incorporate a medicine ball. If you go to a gym watch other people and see what exercises they do to give you more ideas. But it is easy to make up your own.

  3. Rest and stretch. If you kill your abs one day, let them rest but that doesn’t mean you don’t have to do cardio. It’s ok to take a day off a week. But if you don’t need it, don’t take it. Also, yoga is great to help recover faster and it prevents injury.

Now that you know what to do. Let’s do it. And remember once you reach your goal, don’t change what you have been doing. You can’t stop. You have to keep working on it. But it takes 21 days to create a habit and I’m sure it will take longer then 21 days to get what you are looking for so that habit will be there when you are done! Good Luck!
